The Influence of a Localization
Since Mozilla started to see the importance of localization, the number of localizations has increased ever since. Of course they have been debating about the necessity to see if it was worthwhile.
It's really important if you ask me and after what I heard this week I am convinced. Here's the small note I'd like to share:
After the release of Thunderbird 3 beta 2 we made a pressrelease, that it was also becoming available in Frisian. Somehow (maybe accidently) it showed up in a Dutch newspaper, DePers, in the Frisian language (Friesland is a province of The Netherlands). This curious thing was being noticed by so many people that it was kind of "talk of the day" in some offices. Also including the local government Fryslân. From my localization co-worker I heard that the province government now was thinking of trying to implement the use of Thunderbird! So there's your influence of a Localization.
Let's hope Thunderbird will continue to evolve and can be used in larger offices with the ability to connect properly to collaboration services. On MozCamp I heard there is some development going on again for OpenExchange and Thunderbird.

First Mozilla Presentation at MozCamp in Utrecht
So I did it, my first real short presentation for Mozilla.

Last week I was asked by Fabrice Mous from NOIV to do a small talk about the Dutch Mozilla Community. Well that's an honour, since I am not that a specific frontman of the community, more like the Frisian one. All I had to do is tell who I am and what I do for Mozilla.
After the introduction I told the audience of 70 people about my start with the internet by using Netscape in the early 90's, because it was fast and safe. And I continued to use it via Mozilla Suite, Phoenix, Firebird and Firefox throughout the years.
What made it interesting was the ability to change the programs as you like with little programs, called add-ons these days and see other people using and enjoying it. A larger change was the translation of Firefox into Frisian and started as a gimmick, but in 2005 I gathered some people to get it completely done and with 2.0.0.5 we had an official localization ready in 2006. Since last week there is also a Frisian Thunderbird in the bèta's, pretty nice!
So what about the Dutch Community? In my view there are a view important websites, namely:
www.mozbrowser.nl
www.mozilla-nl.org and
http://www.mozilla-europe.org
In the hallway I met some other people who are involved in development and Q&A, etc. All people who haven't met each other earlier, so this was a great chance to see the community is actually larger than the view I have. I guess th Dutch Community has some structuring to do to give them some sort of central place for all activities.
Right now I am listening to Paul Rouget talking about the canvas element while working on Tristans Hollywood entrance.

Earste Fryske testferzje Thunderbird
It is safier, nei moannen hurd wurkjen oan de oersetting is der no einlik de earste offisjele Fryske Thunderbird 3. It programma is noch yn it bètastadium, mar elkenien kin no al besjen hoe't it wurket.Wy binne tige bliid mei it resultaat en hoopje dat in protte minsken Thunderbird 3 brûke sille yn it Frysk as it ien kear folslein klear is. De definitive ferzje stiet plant foar foar de simmer. Wy hoopje dat dat slagget, want tsjin dy tiid komt ek de nije ferzje Firefox 3.1 út.

Yn elts gefal ha se in moaie nije webstee makke foar Thunderbird.

MozCamp yn Utert
Freed 6 maart wurd yn Utert de earste gearkomst hâlden yn in reeks troch hiel Europa. MozCamp is in searje fan lokaal organisearre barrens fan minsken dy't mei passy dwaande binne en reitsje oer it Iepen Web. It is de bedoeling dat de MozCamp-gearkomsten romte biede foar diskusje, demonstraasjes en it tegaar betinken en útfieren fan aktiviteiten om it iepen en gearwurkjende karakter fan it ynternet te behâlden.
Yn Utert sille ferskate leden fan it Mozilla-projekt oanwêzich wêze, ûnder oaren Tristan Nitot.
As it yn it programma past, dan sil ik der ek noch in praatsje hâlde oer myn wurk foar Mozilla.

Firefox banners
Mozilla is al in tiid dwaande om Firefox bekend te meitsjen by it grutte publyk. Dêrfoar ha se ûnder oare it webstee www.spreadfirefox.com opset. It is hielendal yn de gedachte fan Mozilla dat elkenien meiwurkje kin oan de fersprieding fan Firefox. Elkenien kin ideeën opjaan foar aktiviteiten en aksjes.
Ien derfan is it gebrûk fan banners op in webstee. Foarbylden binne te finen op http://www.spreadfirefox.com/affiliates/homepage. Ferline wike bin ik oan de slach west om de Fryske ferzje te meitsjen en it resultaat is no te finen op http://www.spreadfirefox.com/affiliates/homepage?category=27&locale=49#getbuttons.
Dus wolle jo meihelpe om Firefox bekender te meitsje en dan ek noch yn it Frysk, kies dan in banner út en pleats it op jo webstee. Hjirûnder in foarbyld:
